Canon fire, ceremonial honour guard, and Lucerne tradition in the castle park
On Thursday, 19 June 2025, Château Gütsch will host a unique celebration of Corpus Christi – or as we say in Lucerne: “Herrgottstag.” The historic Brotherhood of the Herrgottskanoniere will bring their traditional ceremony to our grounds above the city.
The spectacle begins at dawn: at exactly 7:00 a.m., the first salute will echo across the valley as the ceremonial guards, dressed in historical uniforms and using real black powder, open the day with a bang. This will be followed by a field mass in the castle park – held outdoors in all weather conditions.
From 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., the “Batterie Gütsch” will be in full action: with precise salutes, the Herrgottskanoniere accompany the Eucharist and city procession from above. An impressive moment – with panoramic views over Lucerne and the lake.
What awaits you in the castle park:
Live traditional canon salutes
Herrgottskanoniere in full ceremonial dress
Horse preparations on-site at Château Gütsch
A rare glimpse into living Lucerne tradition
Free admission – everyone is welcome.
Stroll through the castle park, soak in the special atmosphere of this public holiday, and experience a piece of Lucerne’s identity at one of the city’s most historic sites.
